Earlier this year, we wrote about some migration (moving) trends for the first part of 2025. Allied Van Lines has now released its final moving statistics for 2025, and there are some interesting trends.
Key Moving Trends for 2025
- Overall moving activity: Moves were down once again in 2025, continuing a three-year trend. The good news is that moving activity was only down 3 percent this year.
- Shift to midsize cities: There continues to be steady movement toward midsize cities, particularly those located in lower cost-of-living states.
- AI and tech-driven relocations: The growing demand for AI-related tech roles is leading to a larger percentage of moves to major tech hubs such as Washington, DC and Atlanta.
- Healthcare growth: Healthcare continues its impressive growth rate of around 13 percent. States with a high concentration of healthcare jobs, such as Florida and Texas, are seeing increased inbound migration.
- Age group shifts: Baby boomers now make up 42 percent of all home buyers. Millennials account for only 29 percent, down nearly 9 percent in just one year.
- Preferred moving dates: One trend that has not changed is when people choose to move. Most moves still occur during the summer months and toward the end of the week. June remains the busiest month, followed by July and May.

Why These Trends Are Happening
This begs a few questions. Why Tennessee? It is affordable, hip, and geared toward newlyweds and college graduates, with strong tech and healthcare startups. Why New York? Despite its high cost of living, it offers outstanding job opportunities, quick train access, and the impact of return-to-work policies.
Chicago, Illinois continues to struggle due to high costs of living, high tax rates, and the loss of major employers such as Caterpillar and Boeing. California is experiencing a mass exodus driven by several factors, including major employers leaving due to high taxes, and residents relocating because of strict regulations and soaring living costs.
