Somerville, New Jersey is a small but very popular little town in the populous county of Somerset County, New Jersey. Somerville has a population of around 14,400 residents, while Somerset County as a whole has a population of around 357,400. A sign of the popularity of Somerville is their very high home prices. Currently, the average home price is around $538,000, while the median price is almost $618,000! There are several reasons for the popularity of Somerville. One is the proximity to New York City, as it is only 45 miles away. Another reason is the network of highways that run through Somerville, or very near to it. U.S. Route 22 and U.S. Route 206 run right through the town, while Interstate 78 runs just above the town. Also, the popular Somerville Station, a New Jersey Transit railroad station on the Raritan Valley Line, is located just south of the downtown center of Somerville. This station enables passengers to get to and from many locations throughout New Jersey. Somerville is also a very pretty town with some notable landmarks and events that occur there.

Historic Landmarks and Local Attractions

  • The Somerville Exempt Fire Museum: This museum contains 190 years of Somerville firefighting history, including an 1850 Dwin & Company hand pumper, an 1873 steam-powered engine, an Amoskeag 500 GPM pumper from 1873, and a 1942 Mack L95S fire engine, plus numerous helmets, uniforms, photos, and other fire service memorabilia.
  • The Historic Somerset County Courthouse and Monuments: Somerville’s history predates the Revolutionary War and is showcased through its courthouse and surrounding monuments.
  • The Historic Somerville Cemetery: With gravestones and massive concrete monoliths dating back to the 19th century, the dirt pathway through the cemetery is lined with a magnificent canopy of pink dogwoods and other sturdy hardwoods and mature pine trees. The dogwoods were planted in the 1920s and 1930s. The dogwood is Somerville’s official tree, and while some of the original dogwoods have died, the cemetery continues to replace any dead trees each year.

Annual Events and Community Traditions

  • The Annual Tour of Somerville: A high-profile international cycling event that dates back over 80 years. The event draws competitors from all over the world, is very well attended by spectators, and includes eight preliminary races, concluding with a 50-mile men’s race and a 50-kilometer women’s race.
  • Classic Cruizers: This Friday night tradition has been going on for decades and features Model T Fords, big-fin Cadillacs, high-powered Corvettes, custom hot rods, muscle cars, motorcycles, restored pickup trucks, imports, and other oddities. This car show has been rated among the best in the country by Hot Rod magazine.
  • The Police Unity Tour: For almost 30 years, this 4-day, 300-mile Police Unity Tour has paid tribute to slain officers and the families left behind. On day one, led by an honor guard of motorcycles, hundreds of police cyclists from northern and central New Jersey pedal through town on their journey to the nation’s capital.
  • The Firemen’s Inspection: A 116-year-old borough ordinance that requires firefighters and equipment to be inspected by the governing body each year. A bell cast in 1910 is used to summon the volunteer firefighters, all dressed in full blue tunics and wearing white gloves as they have done since 1909. The firefighters stand at attention in front of their trucks and eventually parade down Main Street.
