Norristown is a large borough of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, located about 15 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Norristown was named after Isaac Norris, a prosperous Quaker merchant who purchased the land from William Penn in 1704. Originally established as a mill town, the population much more recently increased by almost 10% to 34,424, according to the latest census of 2010. The population changes that have occurred in Norristown reflect both its history and its resilience.
The Rapid Growth of Norristown, PA
Due to its location, Norristown grew rapidly after the Civil War. There were 22,325 residents as of 1900, and over 38,000 by 1940. During this long period of expansion Norristown was an industrial, retail, banking, and government center. There were ample employment opportunities, and the downtown area thrived. With two large department stores, several theatres, numerous businesses, and plenty of other amenities, the residents never had to leave town to get anything they needed. Sadly, over the next several decades two large malls opened nearby, downtown business dwindled, and many companies closed or relocated elsewhere.
Well-Developed Transportation Services!
The good news is Norristown’s location at the junction of several major highways in the Philadelphia region has kept the borough thriving, and again made it a growing community. Route 202 runs right through Norristown, and two other roads lead directly to the Turnpike and Route 476. Norristown is also the largest transportation hub in Montgomery County, with many rail lines, bus routes, and trails. SEPTA operates eight suburban bus routes, plus a high-speed line, and a regional rail line. The three major bus companies in Pennsylvania also run seven days a week from the Norristown Transportation Center. In addition, a $60 million joint effort by Montgomery County, PennDOT, and the Federal Highway Administration is underway to improve highway access and mobility to downtown Norristown. With all of the effort going into the continuing revitalization of the downtown area, the increased ease of access will make that goal attainable.
Norristown is in a major part of southeastern Pennsylvania, and is poised to become an increasing destination spot for many years.
