O’Brien’s Moving & Storage and Allied Van Lines are jointly celebrating 95 years of providing excellent moving services to their customers. For what is fast approaching a century, our two moving organizations have grown from small service providers to customer-focused companies dedicated to quality service.
History of O'Brien's Moving & Storage
John A. O’Brien purchased his first truck, a Model A Ford, in 1928 to begin delivering ice and packages for local merchants in the Reading, Pennsylvania area. In 1936, he purchased his first moving truck and soon began delivering packages and new furniture to a nearby department store, becoming a local mover as part of a growing selection of services.
During the 1960s, O’Brien’s Moving & Storage began their long relationship with a van line, becoming an interstate agent for Allied Van Lines. Also during the 1960s, John purchased his first warehouse and began serving the region with residential storage of customers goods. These two events started the explosive growth of what has become a full-service, professional moving and storage company.
Today, O’Brien’s Moving & Storage has grown to a fleet of more than 40 trucks, with locations in Allentown and Reading, PA. Our moving and storage facilities offer more than 60,000 square feet of residential and commercial storage space for our customers.
History of Allied Van Lines
Allied Van Lines was also created in 1928 as a non–profit organization, born on a suggestion by the National Furniture Warehouseman’s Association to assist independent movers so that they could survive by performing return loads and expand coverage. It was estimated that the number of shipments running east to west was 10 times the number running west to east, hence a “van line” was formed to operate as an alliance to provide centralized dispatching: Allied Van Lines. They started acquiring agents along the east coast and central United States, and soon expanded operations to the west coast.
Today, Allied Van Lines has grown to over 300 agents, and serves customers all over the world.
