Located in the center of Somerset County New Jersey, Bridgewater was incorporated as one of the state's 104 original townships back in 1798. In 1777 the first official American flag was raised in the Middlebrook encampment and a Thirteen Star Flag is proudly flown 24 hours a day in the Washington Camp Ground. The hoisting of the flag is commemorated every 4th of July with a reading of the Declaration of Independence as a new flag is raised.
Once considered a farming town, Bridgewater has steadily grown into a popular residential city. The first influx of residents flocked here in the late 1960's. Commuters to New York City prefer Bridgewater due to its proximity to major highways and the Bridgewater Station on the New Jersey Transit's Raritan Valley Line. Nine different communities with their own unique charm exist within Bridgewater's city limits.
One of the main attractions of Bridgewater is Washington Valley Park. This 719 acre landscape along the First Watchung Ridge is not only home to excellent fishing and scenic hiking and mountain biking trails; it is also one of the East Coast's top spots for hawk watching. The Washington Valley Park Watch Area hosts several hundred hawkwatchers from all sections of the Northeast from August to November.
