Kutztown is located in Berks County, and is centrally located between the cities of Reading and Allentown. George (Coots) Kutz bought 130 acres of land back in 1755, which became the first lots in the new town of “Cootstown,” later renamed Kutztown. Hence the famous mispronunciation of Kutztown. Kutztown has a strong economy mainly due to Kutztown University. Originally known as a liberal arts college, Kutztown University has grown substantially and now offers many excellent programs and graduate studies. Many famous athletes attended Kutztown University, including professional football players Bruce Harper and John Mobley, NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Andre Reed, and professional baseball player Ryan Vogelsong, among others.
